Paint & Mandala Rocks

Sealing Your Art

You’ve spent all that time creating a lovely work of art. Now what?

Acrylic paint is water-based, meaning that water can take that paint (mostly) right off. Canvases, rocks and other objects need to be sealed, and there are many options: polyurethane, lacquer, enamel, varnish, polycyclic.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a sealer.

  • Will the art be kept indoors or is this a rock to be placed in your garden, for instance? Not all sealers will work outdoors, so be sure to read the label.
  • Do you have a well-ventilated area to spray on a finish? If not, you will probably want to find a brush on sealer.
  • Does the sealer protect against water if it will be used outdoors?
  • What sheen do you like? Gloss, semi-gloss, satin or matte?
  • Are you concerned about the sealant turning a slight yellow? If so, avoid lacquer-based products.

Be sure to read the back of the can to be sure the product is right for your project. Follow safety recommendations for usage. Most importantly, spray outside with proper ventilation. And, lastly, avoid disaster and test your sealer on a sample piece.

Here are some of the most recommended products.
