Paint & Mandala Rocks

Choosing Colors – A Winning Combination

Winning color combinations draw us in and make us swoon. Think Elspeth McLean’s art, for instance or Brandon Rollin’s colorful dots.

But what if you aren’t blessed with the gift of an eye for color or training in color theory? Luckily, technology is our friend: YouTube, Pinterest and Instagram are obvious choices for ideas.

There are many talented artists painting mandala rocks and canvases, but McLean’s color choices simply amaze. You can find her everywhere—her website, facebook, etsy, youtube—but definitely follow her on Instagram.

If you truly have the desire to learn a little about color theory, you might want to start here.

If you are somewhat tech saavy, you can try their color calculator.

Perhaps you are more of a reader. Here’s a nice website with all the basics.

Sometimes, though, you just want ideas to imitate. Pinterest is your go-to for this. You can search “color combinations” or “color palettes” or “color schemes.” Try this one or this one.

Paint chip samples from your local home improvement center or paint store can be another source of ideas. They are small and can be easily moved around to form endless combinations of color. Scrapbook paper, greeting cards, magazines or postcards can also be sources of inspiration.

In the beginning, your choices will be dictated by the paints you can find. So choose what you like! Make yourself happy!
